Our overall customer MDF Municipal Development Fund is responsible for the development of local authorities in the whole of Georgia for refuse collection among other services. Via a consulting office, the project was implemented as part of a Non Project Aid Grant with the help of Japanese investors.

Country: Georgia
Towns/inhabitants:

  • Tiflis 1.4 million
  • Zugdidi 120,000
  • Poti 70,000
  • Gori 80,000
  • Borjomi 35,000
  • Dusheti 15,000

Specification of the project

The project was to provide approx. 5800 MGB 1100 litre waste containers made from galvanised sheet steel in different towns to initiate a properly organised refuse collection system in Georgia. In collaboration with MDF, the number of refuse containers for the various towns was determined and accordingly supplied to each town. This is the first stage in the medium term plan to initiate the separate collection and recycling of refuse in Georgia.

Recommendation

For hygienic and practical reasons, all containers were equipped with a foot pedal lid opener. To protect the property, all MGBs were equipped with an unique embossment on the lid.

Implementation

The implementation was completed in several phases. The publicity work, in other words the public information provided relating to the introduction of the new collection system, started several months before the distribution date. The containers were produced in line with the distribution, so that the allocation was made within the timeframe specified by the customer.

Result

Acceptance from the population is greater than originally anticipated. MDF now intends to start providing containers for separate waste collection in the near future.
